Swords and Sandals Immortals builds its fantasy around extravagant gladiatorial combat. The battles are turn-based, and defeat can mean losing limbs without ending the fight. Its deliberately outlandish arsenal and abilities include wielding guitars and unleashing a shout powerful enough to bring down an opponent’s head, giving the arena a comic edge alongside its brutality.
Players can shape a gladiator from a broad range of races, customize their appearance, and develop skills through deep skill trees. Hundreds of weapons can be crafted and equipped, while combat allows fighters to throw weapons or even discarded healing potions. Outside the arena, the single-player campaign sends gladiators across Brandor to challenge Arena Champions, with fast-paced 3D dungeon crawls along the way. The story continues the thread from Swords and Sandals III as the Automatons return.
The game also offers online, turn-based PvP against player-controlled gladiators, alongside its single-player adventure. Its appeal is rooted in building an unusual fighter, testing that build through tactical combat, and taking the contest either through Brandor or online.
