Suzerain casts the player as Anton Rayne, president of Sordland during a fraught political transition. The country faces economic turmoil and pressure for democratic reform, while rival superpowers watch its changing political landscape. Rayne must steer the nation through a first term where public policy and private obligations both matter.
Play centers on a branching political narrative, with conversations and consequential decisions spanning security, the economy, welfare, and diplomacy. Rayne works with his Cabinet and influential figures, weighing political necessities against personal values and the demands of keeping allies. The game also asks the player to balance presidential duty with family relationships, giving policy decisions a personal dimension. Country and city tokens, policies, situations, news, and reports provide ways to follow affairs and see the results of actions. Multiple major endings and sub-endings give the choices a long-term narrative consequence.
Its defining activity is shaping Rayne’s presidency through dialogue, policy, and relationships, with the story branching according to those decisions.
