Subsistence is an open-world survival game played from a first-person perspective, either alone or cooperatively against the environment. Its changing seasons, weather and day-night cycle make the world part of the challenge, while hunger, thirst and temperature shape the character’s day-to-day needs. The focus, however, extends beyond simply enduring those conditions: the game centers on building and sustaining a base.
Gathering and refining resources feeds into crafting, technology and base improvements. Bases depend on a power system, and players can farm crops, cook food, fish and raise small animals. The world also contains AI hunters that build their own bases. Players must protect their settlement from attacks and can raid hunter bases for loot, giving resource management a direct connection to combat and security.
That mix gives Subsistence a particular co-op format: friends can work together in a PvE sandbox, while single-player remains an option for a more solitary effort. Its distinctive appeal lies in turning survival into a longer project of developing, powering and defending a home in a hostile world.
