Subnautica 2 sends players to an unfamiliar ocean world after conflict drives them from home. A colony ship’s AI insists that its mission continue despite a crisis that leaves the player stranded, with the future of humanity on this planet at stake. That setup frames survival as more than enduring the environment: exploration also means investigating the AI’s motives and the mysteries beneath the surface.
Diving and preparation are central to the design. Players can travel through vivid biomes in a Tadpole submersible, scan and study local life, and build customizable bases to return to when deeper expeditions outstrip the safety of shallow water. The wildlife ranges from small creatures to imposing Leviathans, while ruins offer another reason to explore. These systems tie discovery to practical adaptation, asking players to learn about the planet while finding ways to push farther into it.
The game is designed primarily for solo play, with optional online cooperative multiplayer for up to three friends. Its player-count context therefore includes both an individual survival adventure and the possibility of exploring with a small group. Subnautica 2 is being developed as an Early Access title, with its world and narrative planned to expand during development; the stated design gives players an alien frontier to investigate whether they venture alone or together.
