After the Black Day tears Arkham from Earth, the city is stranded in an alien realm where cults flourish and survivors struggle to hold on to their sanity. Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones is a narrative-driven horror CRPG that follows a survivor searching for the mysterious Dismal Man. Its Lovecraftian setting is more than atmosphere: the game builds new stories from familiar cosmic-horror ideas while making the player’s worldview part of the role-playing.
Character creation starts with one of eight archetypes, each shaping origins, skills, dialogue options, and how the protagonist approaches the world. Beliefs such as rationalism, religion, or nihilism affect interactions and sanity recovery, while a deteriorating mental state can alter perception and open different actions. Dialogue, skills, and decisions offer alternatives to violence, but choices can permanently close off paths. Unusual companions may join the journey, and decisions can leave them lost, killed, or unavailable.
When a fight is unavoidable, combat is turn-based and tactical, with positioning and movement central to keeping the party safe. Scarce consumables can bring lasting drawbacks, and magic trades sanity for power, so avoiding an encounter may be wiser than winning it.
