Stronghold: Warlords brings the series’ castle economies to East Asia, framing its battles around Mongol forces, imperial warriors and samurai clans. Its historical campaigns range from ancient China to the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Mongol Empire, while the broader premise pairs military conquest with the work of building and managing a stronghold.
The defining twist is command over AI warlords, each offering distinct perks and upgradeable abilities. They can support industry, strengthen borders or join an attack, giving battlefield decisions an economic and tactical dimension. Gunpowder-powered weapons, including the hwacha arrow launcher and fire oxen, add new ways to break fortified positions; recruitment also spans units such as samurai, ninja and Mongolian horse archers.
That mix supports several ways to play: campaign missions, skirmish scenarios, multiplayer battles and a Free Build sandbox with AI invasions. Multiplayer accommodates human and AI opponents, while each campaign, skirmish or multiplayer game brings a fresh set of warlords to command.
