Stronghold HD is a medieval castle-building and siege strategy game centered on reclaiming England from four rival lords: the Rat, Pig, Snake, and Wolf. Its story campaign spans 21 missions, with objectives that include breaking sieges, capturing enemy castles, gathering gold, and withstanding attacks. Rather than focusing only on conquest, the game also offers a separate economic campaign built around developing a settlement under a time limit.
The core design brings castle construction and battlefield tactics together. Players build defenses with working economies and killing zones, then command troops in real time, using maneuvers such as flanking, feigned retreats, and traps. A high-resolution battlefield view can show the entire map on one screen, making it easier to follow the wider action while directing an assault or watching a defense unfold.
Beyond the campaigns, Siege That! lets players besiege historical castles, while a combat-free economic mode provides a quieter setting for castle building. The game also supports online play for up to eight players and Steam Cloud saves. This combination of hands-on construction, resource management, and tactical sieges gives Stronghold HD its defining appeal: the fortress is both a home to develop and a battlefield to shape.
