Streets of Rogue is a top-down rogue-lite set in a functioning, procedurally generated city rather than a dungeon. Its residents follow daily routines, while players pursue mission goals amid a world shaped by complex AI. The premise makes each district more than a combat arena: the surrounding people, objects, and environment can all factor into getting the job done.
The game’s defining appeal is freedom of approach. A soldier can fight openly, a doctor can use chloroform or tranquilizer darts for stealth, and a bartender can talk past guards. Hacking, character traits, items, and environmental interactions offer other routes through objectives, including a gorilla character who can free others and build a small army. Random generation and a broad roster of distinct characters support varied runs, while the item list ranges from shrink rays and hypnotizing devices to bear traps and guns.
Co-op keeps the same anarchic mission-based premise, but makes the game’s emphasis on experimentation relevant to a group as well as an individual. Its mix of stealth, conversation, combat, and absurd tools is central to what distinguishes it from a more conventional dungeon-focused roguelite.
