Streets of Rage 4 brings Axel, Blaze, Adam and other returning characters back to Wood Oak City, where they confront a new group of criminals. As a revival of the classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up series, it keeps the focus on close-quarters brawling while presenting its action through lush, hand-drawn animation. Its visual style and electronic dance-influenced music give the return a distinct identity rather than treating it as a simple reissue.
Combat builds on the series’ established formula with new mechanics and abilities, and the game offers different ways to take on its fights. Players can clean up the streets alone or cooperate online with a friend; local play supports teams of up to four. Battle Mode instead pits friends against one another, while Boss Rush Mode centers on taking down bosses as a team.
The soundtrack is another defining part of the design, drawing on the series’ dance-music legacy and featuring work from a broad lineup of composers. Twelve stages give the campaign a set of distinct settings, while unlockable characters in their original pixel versions connect the hand-drawn presentation to the older games. Together, its returning cast, refreshed combat, varied multiplayer formats and musical heritage make Streets of Rage 4 a modern continuation of a recognizable arcade-style action series.
