Strategos is a real-time ancient warfare simulation built around battles among the powers of the Mediterranean classical period. Its scope stretches from the Persian Wars to the rise of the Sasanian Empire against Imperial Rome, framing engagements across nearly a thousand years of history. Players command armies assembled from a broad range of factions and units, with the game presenting both historical battles and scenarios that can be recreated or imagined.
The battlefield design emphasizes formation movement and the consequences of disorder, pursuit, evasion, routing and morale shocks. Terrain, flanking and fog of war add further considerations, while command and control makes generals more than battlefield markers: their positioning and commitment matter for issuing orders, sending couriers, supporting morale and fighting directly. This combination gives Strategos its described hardcore tabletop character in a digital, real-time format.
Players can choose historical battles, text-based campaigns and map-based campaigns, or configure custom battles by selecting armies, allies, units, era, map, deployment and difficulty. Custom options also include AI behavior and hotseat play as an alternative to AI.
