Strategic Command: American Civil War is a turn-based strategy game set during the conflict between the Union and Confederacy. Players direct military operations alongside research, production and diplomacy, with the outcome framed around whether the United States remains united. Its broad scope reaches beyond battlefield command to the political choices and preparations that shape a long war.
The campaign’s enormous map spans North America, while armies grow from volunteers into brigades, divisions and corps. Players research improvements, appoint historical generals and contend with the challenges of reconnaissance in a world without radio communications. Cavalry, scouts, rangers, armoured trains and observation balloons can help locate enemy forces, making information and the risk of ambush central to planning.
River and naval warfare add further strategic dimensions: river warships navigate inland waterways, while fleets include coastal and ocean-going vessels as well as wooden ships and ironclads. Diplomatic decisions and battlefield events can influence whether European powers intervene, and the conflict can extend into Mexico. Six campaigns cover different stages and alternate-history possibilities, alongside an editor for creating campaigns or mods. A caveat: the precise content available in any particular play session may vary.
