Waking from cryostasis after a disaster aboard a colony ship, Stellar Tactics’ genetically engineered mercenary enters a galaxy threatened by the spreading Phage and political conflict. The story sets up a flexible role: assemble a crew, choose whether to work with a political power or remain independent, and pursue the disease’s source. That open-ended premise is paired with a classic role-playing structure rather than a fixed route through the setting.
The game moves between space exploration and tactical encounters on the ground. In turn-based battles, squad members face mutants and other hostile forces, while a classless progression system lets skills improve through use and supports specialization across weapons and abilities. Away from combat, players can scan planets for resources and discoveries, mine asteroids, trade commodities, and disable and board ships for capture. Equipment can be upgraded or crafted, giving those activities a practical link to preparing the crew.
The setting’s many systems and planets support varied pursuits, from following the main story and taking bounties to exploring ruins or developing a trading operation. The combination of a narrative-led RPG and an open-ended space sandbox is the defining shape of Stellar Tactics.
