Steel Division 2 casts you as a commander in Operation Bagration, the Soviet offensive against Nazi armies in Belarus in 1944. Its unusual structure shifts between strategic planning and battlefield command: in the turn-based Dynamic Strategic Campaigns, you move battalions across large maps, manage supply, and decide which forces will enter combat. The campaigns are designed as substantial, week-long operations rather than a sequence of disconnected skirmishes.
When a battalion fights, the perspective changes to real-time tactical combat. You select a division, assemble battlegroups through a deck-building system, study the terrain, and issue orders at the right moment. More than 600 historically accurate units are available, from T-34 tanks to Katyusha rocket launchers and IL-2 aircraft. Campaign battles can be fought directly or handled with autoresolve, letting players lean toward tactical engagements or strategic decision-making.
The game also supports solo play, multiplayer, and co-op, with online and offline modes that include large 10v10 battles. A player total therefore sits alongside several distinct ways to engage with its World War II setting.
