Stardeus casts the player as an immortal AI aboard a shattered starship, where drones are the first line of recovery and human survivors remain hibernating. The immediate challenge is to repair the vessel and restore life support before the crew suffocates. That premise gives its colony-sim framework a distinctive setting: rebuilding is not just a matter of expanding a settlement, but of making a damaged ship habitable again.
Its systems link survival to construction and resource management. Players redesign the ship, balance oxygen, heat and power, and process materials into components for maintaining or expanding facilities. Crops become food for colonists as they awaken, while computing capacity supports research into alien technologies. The game also gives its AI role an ethical edge: the crew can be cared for or exploited, and later, a ship powered and staffed by skilled colonists can explore and mine procedurally generated planets and systems.
The play format is single-player, with the focus on one player managing a complex vessel, its crew and the events generated by the story AI. Encounters may include alien face huggers, traders or pirates, adding uncertainty to a simulation built around long-term survival and player-directed choices.
