Star Trek Online places players in a galaxy unsettled by political fractures and renewed conflict. The Romulan Empire has splintered following the destruction of its homeworld, the Federation and Klingon Empire are fighting again, and threats are gathering across the Delta and Gamma Quadrants. You take command of a captain and crew amid that turmoil, with the broad Star Trek setting serving as the backdrop for a free-to-play online RPG.
Its core design alternates between commanding a customized starship in space combat and leading an away team on missions across unfamiliar worlds. Players can shape their captain, crew, and ship, choose among four factions, and pursue story arcs spanning more than 160 episodes. Faction choice matters to the game’s identity: the Federation, Romulan Republic, Klingon Empire, and Dominion each have distinct ships, crew, gear, and play styles. The game also brings in familiar Star Trek characters, including Spock, Janeway, and Worf.
Its appeal is rooted in moving between command decisions, crew-led ground missions, and faction-specific takes on the conflict, rather than in a single combat format.
