SpaceEngine is a science-based universe simulator built around the freedom to roam across a 1:1-scale cosmos. Its universe combines catalog-based representations of known celestial bodies with procedurally generated regions, so a journey can lead from Earth to distant galaxies and nebulae. Travel is seamless between surface, orbit and interstellar space, with no transitions interrupting the view.
Exploration can be as simple as selecting an object and going there, or a more hands-on flight. The simulator offers free movement with keyboard or gamepad controls, and a Flight Simulator mode in which spacecraft use Newtonian physics and pilot-assist autopilot. Players can also accelerate, slow or reverse time to observe celestial motion. Planet surfaces receive procedural 3D terrain, while built-in maps, object searches and an informational wiki support browsing and discovery. Modding tools add another dimension: users can create and share planets, star systems, galaxies and spacecraft models.
Its listed format is single-player, making SpaceEngine a solitary exploration and simulation experience rather than a session organized around a shared party.
