Space Beret is a top-down sci-fi shooter built around mankind’s desperate fight against hordes of monstrosities. Its stated inspirations, Starship Troopers and Crimsonland, frame an arcade-style premise of confronting waves of dangerous creatures rather than exploring a broader narrative world. Dubstep accompanies both modes, adding a retro science-fiction movie atmosphere to the action.
The game offers two distinct ways to play: Campaign Mode strings together stages populated by monsters, while Survival Mode sends successive waves at the player in a pursuit of the highest score. Weapons and upgrades are gathered during the fight, and collecting a weapon again improves its attributes. The arsenal described ranges from the steady assault rifle to a hard-hitting shotgun, rapid-fire minigun and narrow-line Gauss rifle; power-ups include offensive and defensive drones and shields. Enemy differences give these tools context, from fast, fragile Scarabei to a durable Centurion that fires railgun projectiles.
The appeal rests on compact combat choices, weapon improvement and varied enemy threats, all presented in a retro sci-fi style.
