Sonic Superstars sends Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy across the Northstar Islands, where Dr. Eggman, Fang, and a mysterious adversary threaten the islands’ giant animals. Its core is recognizable 2D side-scrolling platforming, but fully 3D graphics and a new setting give this adventure a fresh visual frame. The playable characters bring distinct abilities, letting players choose who will lead the rush through each environment.
The Chaos Emeralds add seven powers that reshape movement and combat. The listed examples include multiplying and swimming up waterfalls, while other abilities can open new parts of the map or deliver special attacks. That mix of fast traversal, exploration, and character-specific skills distinguishes Superstars from a straightforward run through familiar stages: progress also involves discovering routes and making use of powers suited to the terrain.
Its play formats range from a solo run to campaign co-op for up to four players, with local competition or online Battle Mode supporting up to eight.
