SOMA is a science-fiction horror game set in PATHOS-II, an underwater facility cut off from the world. Its premise ties personal questions about identity and consciousness to a station in crisis: supplies are dwindling, communication has failed, and machines claim to be people. The result is horror shaped as much by uncertainty about what counts as human as by the dangers in the deep.
Progress combines exploration and evasion. Players can search locked terminals and secret documents to piece together what happened, while encounters with corrupted humans, creatures, robots, and an AI demand different ways of staying safe. The game explicitly rules out fighting back, so the central practical choice is whether to outsmart a threat or run. It also places the player among the station’s remaining inhabitants, whose events help determine PATHOS-II’s fate.
Its combination of narrative discovery and vulnerable, noncombat encounters defines the experience more specifically than its broad action and adventure genre labels.
