Slipways pares space grand strategy down to its economic choices, asking players to colonize planets and connect them into mutually supportive trading networks. There is no military dimension: the challenge is to shape a growing empire through careful planning rather than conquest. That focus makes the game feel as much like a puzzle as a strategy game, with each new link potentially changing the fortunes of several colonies.
Planets run themselves, while player actions have immediate consequences. Choosing industries and routing trade demands attention to what each world needs, and the available technologies vary from run to run. Options such as moving planets, drawing energy from stars, or settling worlds with sentient machines can reshape how a sector’s resources fit together. Procedurally generated galaxies and five races with distinct abilities add further variation to those decisions.
The standard mode sets a 25-year empire-building goal, while sandbox endless play supports free experimentation and ranked play compares results on pre-seeded maps. A campaign of 13 scenarios introduces additional twists, with unlocked mechanics also available in other modes.
