Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened recasts the detective’s early partnership with John Watson as a Lovecraftian investigation set in 1882. The pair are still roommates, not yet the celebrated crime-solving duo, when a chain of disappearances across Europe and the United States points toward a cult devoted to an ancient god. The case tests Holmes’s confidence in reason, turning the origin of their partnership into a story about fear as well as deduction.
Following clues takes Holmes from Baker Street to a Swiss psychiatric ward and the wetlands of Louisiana. The investigation is not simply a sequence of conventional crime scenes: the game describes encounters with Eldritch horrors and an insanity system that makes the pursuit of answers part of the danger. It is a reimagining of the 2008 title, rebuilt with modern graphics and animations, and includes an expanded storyline, side quests, and new mechanics.
Listed as a single-player adventure, The Awakened is designed around one player following Holmes’s case rather than coordinating with others.
