Shenmue I & II follows Ryo Hazuki after he witnesses his father’s murder and sees the killer, Lan Di, take the Dragon Mirror. The first game sends Ryo through Yokosuka, Japan, gathering clues and confronting gangsters; Shenmue II carries his pursuit across the sea to Hong Kong, where martial arts masters help him investigate the mystery. Together, the games build an epic revenge tale around one continuing search.
Ryo’s investigation unfolds through hands-on exploration: players examine objects, speak with townspeople and follow leads through a 3D open world. Combat draws on Hazuki-style jujitsu, while quick-time events and mini-games offer different kinds of action. The setting has its own daily rhythm, with changing weather, opening and closing shops, and NPCs following independent schedules. Arcade games, collectibles and duck racing provide diversions along the way.
The combination of sleuthing, fighting and optional activities gives Shenmue I & II a more measured, exploratory shape than a sequence of battles alone. The PC edition also offers modern or classic controls, Japanese audio and scalable screen resolutions, framing these Dreamcast-origin games for PC play without changing the focus on Ryo’s journey.
