Sheltered is a single-player strategy and disaster-management game about keeping a family alive after nuclear catastrophe. Their underground shelter is both refuge and home: players maintain its security and habitability while managing resources in a cramped, hazardous environment. Moral decisions and the family’s changing condition make the survival premise personal, rather than reducing it to a search for supplies.
Survival also requires leaving the shelter. Family members venture into the dangerous wasteland to gather essentials for daily life and crafting, including shelter comforts and weapons. Their attributes, strengths and weaknesses can change through an experience and trauma system. Expeditions bring encounters with roaming factions and feral beasts; when negotiation is not an option, the game offers turn-based combat. Players can also recruit outsiders, choose a pet, and use vehicles to make exploration quicker and safer.
The single-player format puts the focus on one household and its shelter, rather than a team of human co-op partners. It is a survival-management experience centered on household welfare, resource gathering and the consequences of life in a hostile world.
