Shadows Over Loathing sends players to Ocean City after Uncle Murray asks for help at his antique shop, only for him to be missing when they arrive. The search for him and the artifacts he collected leads into shadowy plots, eldritch threats, and a world rendered in expressive black-and-white stick figures. This single-player adventure/RPG mixes its comic tone with a mystery about dangers that reach beyond one shop.
Exploration spans an open world of quests, puzzles, locations, and odd encounters. Character choice shapes the flavor of the journey: the athletic Pig Skinner, cunning Cheese Wizard, and enigmatic Jazz Agent each bring a different comic identity. Strategic turn-based combat is available, but the game describes it as optional, so encounters need not define the whole adventure. Its collection of cursed antiques, baffling 1920s slang, inappropriate fishing, and non-Euclidean horrors points to a deliberately absurd take on the period setting.
Its mix of investigation, optional tactical battles, puzzles, and joke-filled worldbuilding gives that solo format a distinct identity within the Loathing universe.
