Set in the Vanderboom house during the era of Aldous and William Vanderboom, Servant of the Lake casts you as a servant preparing the estate for an arriving visitor. The duties sound ordinary: make the family comfortable, straighten portraits and do laundry. But this is a Rusty Lake adventure, and household work also means helping the family pursue its alchemical ambitions.
The game is a single-player, point-and-click adventure built around solving puzzles as you move through the house. Tasks range from routine chores to assisting with complex experiments and cleaning up their aftermath. Exploring each room while caring for the household ties its domestic routine to a darker story set decades before Rusty Lake: Roots. A haunting soundtrack, composed and performed by Victor Butzelaar, accompanies the puzzles.
Its distinctive appeal lies in the contrast between service work and surreal mysteries, with the visitor’s comfort, the family’s ambitions and your own survival all part of the premise.
