Rance arrives in Nippon hoping for hot springs, but winds up ruling a feudal state and pursuing a larger prize: power. Sengoku Rance casts that conquest as a grand-strategy RPG, with the sword-wielding Rance and his companion Sill at the center of a story about uniting the country. The civil war is more than backdrop: choices shape the fortunes of competing clans and can open different story routes.
The campaign turns on decisions made each turn. You manage territories, armies, and resources, deciding whether to press an offensive, shore up defenses, or develop your domain. Conquering neighboring lands brings resources as well as strategic value. As your reach grows, unique heroes with personal stories and special abilities can join your cause, making recruitment and party composition part of the larger campaign plan.
Battles use tactical, turn-based combat, where assigned commanders and troops face enemy forces with their own commanders and unit types. Armies can also enter dungeons to hunt for resources and equipment. Story scenes respond to conquered areas and campaign progress, while decisions in both events and gameplay can change outcomes. After a first completion, a branching storyline becomes available; subsequent campaigns can explore other strategies and outcomes, with some elements carried over.
