Second Sun casts players as a Sunborn warrior caught in a civil war between the Empire and the Order of the Second Sun. With the Good Sun’s light fading and the Empire close to ruin, the mission is to protect the Empire and win the war. Its premise gives the conflict a vivid fantasy backdrop, while its first-person RPG framing puts the player directly into the fighting.
Combat is fast-paced and built around movement: enemies pursue, attack at close range, and fire at the player, who responds with class abilities, weapons, and skill. Defeated foes and chests can yield gear, feeding a progression loop of killing, looting, and upgrading. Players also choose a class and decide how to develop their Sunborn, making character building part of the same cycle as combat rather than a separate focus.
Exploration combines a crafted open map with procedurally generated enemy placements, points of interest, loot, and dungeons; the dungeons are also described as randomly generated.
