Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin follows a spoiled harvest goddess banished from her celestial home to Hinoe Island, where demons and untamed wilderness await. With her guardian Tama and a group of outcast humans, she must reclaim her place by fighting monsters and learning to cultivate rice. That premise ties the adventure’s two sides together: farming is not a pause from the action, but part of Sakuna’s path to power.
The combat is side-scrolling, with farm tools serving as weapons for quick, heavy, and special attacks. Sakuna’s divine raiment adds grappling and evasive movement, giving her ways to reach distant platforms and face powerful enemies. Between excursions, players follow detailed agricultural steps from planting through harvest. Each crop strengthens Sakuna, and rice qualities such as flavor and appearance correspond to her combat abilities, making cultivation a distinctive part of character development.
The game also gives its human companions a practical role: they use materials and ingredients gathered during adventures to make weapons, armor, and meals, while quests unlock further options. The blend of platforming, agriculture, crafting, and a story inspired by Japanese mythology is what sets Sakuna’s journey apart.
