SAELIG is a single-player strategy and simulation game set in the Dark Ages of England, where players shape a family’s survival, wealth, and legacy in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. Rather than cast the player as a world-saving hero, it frames progress as making a life amid a changing society. The starting role is flexible: the game describes paths from humble labour to trade, property ownership, religious authority, and crime.
Commerce and enterprise are central to that freedom. Players can forage or hunt and sell what they gather, trade goods between markets, invest in property, run businesses, and develop land. The economy is described as a living system in which the population produces and consumes items, while characters pursue lives of their own. Seasons and weather affect the environment and gameplay, and fires, disease, and Viking raids can threaten communities. Repeated actions improve skills through practice, connecting a character’s choices to their development.
The family premise also shapes the play format: players can start a family and continue the story as one of their children after their character dies, making legacy part of the game’s structure.
