Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is a full remake of a 1993 non-linear RPG, built around the fate of the Empire of Varennes. The Seven Heroes, once celebrated as saviors, return as enemies after generations have passed and their sacrifices have been forgotten. You take the role of the Empire’s ruler, defending its legacy as monsters spread and confronting the Seven Heroes. The story’s premise makes succession more than a backdrop: the empire and its leadership persist across the campaign.
That continuity shapes the party and the narrative. Characters from more than 30 classes offer different professions, races, weapons and abilities, while the player chooses an eligible successor to become the next Emperor and protagonist. Inheritance magic passes knowledge and abilities from one ruler to the next. Meanwhile, the free-form scenario changes with decisions such as how to expand the empire and which Hero to challenge first. Combat retains strategic turn-based battles, enhanced with a timeline system, ability-learning Glimmers, formation bonuses and combination attacks called United Attacks.
These connected systems give the game a broad, choice-led RPG format rather than a single fixed route: leadership changes, inherited strengths and the order of objectives all help shape the journey. The remake also presents the original’s pixel-art characters as 3D models and renders towns and dungeons in 3D. Three difficulty settings range from Casual, which puts less emphasis on battle, to Hard (Classic), designed around the original’s challenge.
