Risk of Rain Returns sends players to the dangerous planet Petrichor V, where a mysterious force has gathered monsters from worlds facing extinction. The goal is to fight toward the surface while searching for cargo that can help a run: items can improve movement, damage, or jumping, while rarer finds radically change attacks. The game’s defining appeal lies in combining these effects, turning loot into unpredictable, often explosive builds.
Players choose from a roster of Survivors with distinct abilities, including Chef, Enforcer, Acrid, and the resource-gathering Drifter. Runs can also be reshaped with more than ten Artifacts, which alter conditions through effects such as random equipment or recurring Imp invasions. This mix of character choice, item combinations, and run mutations gives the action roguelike room for varied approaches rather than a single fixed build.
In co-op, Survivors can complement one another, while the Drifter can support teammates or use her abilities for destructive attacks. That flexible play format sits alongside the game’s central loop of exploration, combat, and adapting to whatever combinations a run produces.
