Rift of the NecroDancer brings Cadence into a strange new world where monsters pour through a rift, and combat follows the music. Rather than simply striking on a beat, players must read each foe’s behavior: bats, for example, shift lanes when attacked, while tougher enemies take several hits. The design makes pattern recognition part of keeping the song moving, giving its rhythm action a tactical edge.
The game pairs that combat with a soundtrack of more than 40 Rhythm Rift tracks and four intensity settings for each one, from EASY to IMPOSSIBLE. Remix Mode reshuffles a level’s beatmap on each playthrough while retaining its rhythmic design, and daily challenges use changing circumstances and a shared random seed for leaderboard comparisons. Players can also make custom beat maps with the developers’ tools. Beyond the tracks, the game includes rhythm-based boss battles and slice-of-life minigames featuring Cadence and friends.
A count can therefore be read alongside the game’s varied solo formats, without implying that every player is taking part in the same activity.
