Returnal casts Selene as a survivor stranded on Atropos after a crash-landing, searching the barren remains of an ancient civilization for a way out. This third-person roguelike shooter sets that mystery against bullet-hell combat and a world that changes from cycle to cycle. When Selene dies, she must begin her journey again.
The restart is part of the design: each loop reshapes the planet and changes the items available, inviting different combinations and combat approaches. Selene can scavenge alien technology to strengthen her abilities in future cycles, while fragments of her memories offer clues to the story. Exploration, resource management and survival sit alongside the fast fights, so each return to the hostile landscape brings both renewed danger and new possibilities.
The PC game offers both single-player and online co-op, where a second PC player can join a journey through Atropos; the host’s progress sets the available item pool during that session. The Tower of Sisyphus provides another format, a near-endless climb focused on combat and score.
