Retention begins with a man who has spent his life rushing forward, rarely sleeping and never looking back. After trouble on a trip leaves him on the ground beneath his bicycle, memories from different moments in his life flash through his mind. The central question is whether he can recover those memories and get back on his feet, with the player there to help.
Its defining format is described as a “Game-Photo album”: rather than presenting its premise as a conventional action adventure, it frames the experience around the protagonist’s memories. The game also offers eight different endings, divided between four good and four bad outcomes, making the possible conclusions part of its documented design. An original soundtrack is included, and Steam Trading Cards are supported.
Retention is listed as a single-player adventure, casual and indie game.
