Remnant: From the Ashes casts players as one of humanity’s survivors in a post-apocalyptic world threatened by the Root, an ancient evil from another dimension. Portals lead to other realms as survivors search for the source of the danger, gather resources and try to establish a foothold for humanity. Its third-person survival-action shooting frames that journey as a struggle against monstrous creatures and formidable bosses.
The worlds are dynamically generated, changing maps, enemy encounters, quests and in-world events between playthroughs. Across four distinct worlds, that variation gives exploration a different shape from a fixed sequence of encounters. Combat feeds into a progression loop: defeating enemies and bosses yields experience, loot and materials for upgrading weapons, armor and modifications. Those choices let players approach encounters in different ways, rather than relying on a single fixed arsenal.
The game supports solo play as well as online co-op for up to three players, with teamwork described as important for its toughest challenges and greatest rewards.
