Set fifty years after the original Red Faction, the game casts you as an insurgent fighting alongside the re-established resistance against the Earth Defense Force on Mars. Its open-world setting spans locations from the mining outpost of Parker to the EDF capital of Eos, with settlers and resistance fighters caught in the conflict. That liberation struggle gives the destruction a clear purpose: weakening the occupying force, not simply leveling scenery.
Combat is built around player choice and improvised tactics. You can take missions in any order, use modified vehicles and improvised weapons, or attack EDF targets with guerrilla strategies suited to your approach. The defining twist is that destruction changes how you move and fight: blast through walls to escape or ambush enemies, or demolish a staircase to impede pursuers. Physics-based damage also supports chain-reaction explosions and permanently altered surroundings, making the environment part of each encounter.
The game combines this single-player open-world campaign with separate multiplayer combat modes, where players test guerrilla tactics against one another in destructive battles. The central appeal is the freedom to shape both the battlefield and the approach to the fight.
