Set in the United States in 1830, Railway Empire casts players as railroad entrepreneurs competing to build a powerful company as industry expands. The goal is not simply to lay track: players must outthink rival tycoons while developing a network that can serve the growing economy and carry the business into the twentieth century.
Its strategy combines route-building with detailed business management. Players can purchase more than forty modeled trains, place stations and maintenance buildings, and add factories or tourist attractions to support the network. Hiring and managing workers matters alongside developing technologies across five eras, with research spanning train improvements, workplace infrastructure and passenger amenities. Rivalry also has a sharper edge: the game describes raids and industrial espionage as ways to attack and sabotage competing companies.
The single-player format frames Railway Empire as a contest against up to three rival tycoons, rather than a cooperative network-building experience.
