Railroader is an operations-focused railroad simulator set in transition-era Appalachia, where vintage steam and diesel trains serve communities along mountain routes. Its premise puts the railroad in the player’s hands: accept work from customers, move freight and passengers, and decide how the line develops. The setting draws inspiration from the Southern Railway’s Murphy Branch, with scenery presented from both the ground and the locomotive cab.
The work is more than driving between stations. Freight cars arrive at an interchange yard, and players route them to their destinations, from machine parts to pulpwood. Contracts can be chosen to suit the railroad’s capacity, while earnings support goals such as acquiring locomotives or passenger cars, extending the mainline, and upgrading the operation. Players can also take the dispatcher’s role, using ABS and CTC signaling systems and a recreated Centralized Traffic Control machine to manage traffic. AI Engineers can handle a manifest freight between yards or operate controls during switching.
The format ranges from solo play to multiplayer, including co-op and online co-op, and the game describes possibilities from a daily mixed train to organized crews on a multiplayer server. AI Engineers can help cover operational tasks, while customization lets players choose lettering, paint colors, and whistles.
