Quake casts players as Ranger, a warrior searching four dark dimensions for magic runes to confront an ancient evil. Its campaign moves through infested military bases, medieval castles, lava-filled dungeons, and gothic cathedrals, setting its grim fantasy apart from a conventional military shooter. The core design pairs fast first-person combat with a weapon arsenal and a bestiary of corrupted knights, ogres, and other twisted creatures.
The Enhanced edition preserves the original game while adding visual options such as widescreen support, enhanced models, dynamic lighting, and anti-aliasing. Its package also includes two original expansions and three developed by MachineGames, alongside curated add-ons and fan-made missions. That gives Quake’s retro shooter framework a substantial range of dark settings and campaign material without changing its central quest.
Beyond solo play, the campaign and expansions support cooperative play, while competitive modes offer online or local split-screen matches. Online matchmaking has dedicated-server support, and custom matches can use peer-to-peer connections. The original and Enhanced versions are both available to owners, with the latter adding enhanced multiplayer support and crossplay.
