Quake Live is id Software’s multiplayer-focused successor to Quake III Arena, built around the series’ fast, furious arena-shooter action. Its design points toward direct competition: players can connect with friends and others around the world, while career statistics and match history offer records of their play.
A broad arena selection gives that combat its setting, with more than 100 maps developed by id Software and the Quake community. The game also offers more than a dozen modes, spanning Free-for-All and Duel to team formats such as Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, alongside Clan Arena and Domination. That range makes Quake Live less a single fixed match format than a collection of competitive ways to play.
A count can indicate activity across that mix, while the arena-shooter premise and varied match types explain what players are gathering to do.
