Quake II pairs a new science-fiction setting with the fast, direct combat of a first-person shooter. Humanity’s strike on the Strogg homeworld has failed, leaving the player to fight through fortified installations and disable the hostile aliens’ war machine. The premise gives the campaign a clear military objective, while its industrial landscapes, waterways, air ducts and canyons place the fighting across varied hostile terrain.
The game’s scope extends well beyond its central campaign. Its two original mission packs add further Strogg operations, while Call of the Machine brings a separate story about a reality-threatening machine and the Strogg-Maker. The enhanced edition also includes the original version, so players can choose between an untouched, moddable release and an edition with improved visuals and additional campaign content. These distinct versions and missions give Quake II a broader identity than a single campaign alone.
Multiplayer supplies a different pace: players can take on the campaign and expansions together in online or local split-screen co-op, or compete in deathmatch and team deathmatch. Online play supports larger matches, while local split-screen offers smaller groups; bots are available in offline and online modes.
