Pyre casts you as the leader of a band of exiles crossing the Downside, a mystical purgatory where ancient competitions offer a path back to freedom. The stakes are personal as well as dramatic: the story asks which companions will return to glory and which will remain in exile. Supergiant Games frames this journey as a branching narrative, with outcomes shaped by victories and defeats rather than a forced stop when things go wrong.
Its central contests are three-on-three confrontations called Rites. For each one, you choose three party members, then equip them with Talismans and Masteries before facing colorful adversaries. The game’s unusual blend of party-based role-playing and fast-paced ritual showdowns gives its battles a distinct place within the narrative: a result moves the exiles closer to enlightenment, while the journey continues either way. Hand-painted art and an evocative musical score reinforce the fantasy setting.
Pyre is built primarily around a single-player campaign, but it also offers local two-player Versus Mode, with a friend or CPU opponent and a choice of more than twenty characters.
