Purgatory II begins with ex-General Xzus betrayed by a dagger in his back, then follows his escape from Purgatory into the land of the living. He seeks revenge on those who wronged him and hopes to find and protect his daughter, Lucile. The premise gives its fantasy strategy adventure a personal goal alongside its battles, with hand-drawn pixel art and frame-by-frame animation shaping the presentation.
Purgatory serves as a hub where players can improve stats, complete challenges and hire creatures for the journey. The player chooses which allies to recruit, each bringing distinct skills and attributes, and can buy and equip gear to strengthen the force. The route through the living world is presented as a map: each point brings a journal entry and a battle challenge, while encounters may include ambushes or concealed treasure chests. The game also describes fortress sieges, traps and Spirit Points earned through challenges.
Its journal-like progression puts story and reading between tactical encounters rather than framing the game as a shared session. The combination of recruiting, equipment choices and battle challenges gives the campaign its strategic texture, while the revenge-and-rescue premise keeps Xzus’s journey at its center.
