Proverbs turns digital cross-stitch into a sprawling logic puzzle, asking players to complete a single grid of more than 54,000 pieces. Its subject is Peter Bruegel the Elder’s enigmatic painting *Netherlandish Proverbs*: solving the mosaic reveals over 100 illustrations inspired by sixteenth-century Dutch proverbs and idioms, including sayings that remain familiar today.
The central rule draws on Minesweeper. Each numbered clue, from zero to nine, indicates how many light tiles belong within one square of that clue, so progress comes from interpreting nearby numbers and placing tiles accordingly. The game presents that puzzle-solving as calm and meditative, with a built-in Renaissance soundtrack as an option; it is also designed to sit alongside podcasts or other music. More than 90 achievements add goals around the mosaic without changing its defining grid-based premise.
Proverbs is listed as single-player, so its play format is a solitary puzzle experience rather than a multiplayer session.
