Portal Stories: Mel is a free, community-made mod for Portal 2, set in the Portal universe. Its story begins in 1952, when Mel takes part in a faulty test at Aperture: Science Innovators and wakes years later. A false Cave Johnson tells her to escape, leaving her to confront questions about the facility, its staff and the identity of the voice guiding her.
The adventure brings Mel into contact with a new personality core and an undiscovered threat to Aperture. Its puzzles are described as logic-based rather than execution-based, making reasoning the stated focus of its challenge design. The custom story is supported by 350 separate in-game voice lines, while the mod also includes more than an hour of original music and a large collection of custom assets.
Portal Stories: Mel is presented as a standalone mod, so Portal 2 need not be installed, though ownership of Portal 2 on Steam is required. The project lists 22 levels and estimates six to ten hours of gameplay, as well as 27 Steam achievements. Together, those details outline a substantial puzzle adventure rooted in Aperture’s history, with its original story and audiovisual material distinguishing it from a simple set of Portal-style tests. Mod content may differ from the wider Portal experience.
