Population Zero casts players as a stranded colonist on Kepler after a shipwreck, facing a countdown to human extinction and a race to repair the reactor and restart a hibernation pod. The planet is more than a backdrop: its seven biomes, hostile conditions, creatures, and secrets frame a survival story about adapting to an unknown frontier. Players can cooperate with fellow colonists or turn against them, shaping the experience around either exploration or rivalry.
Its play formats give that choice distinct stakes. PvE modes let players explore without risking hard-earned gear in battles against veteran players, while competitive modes put combat skills to the test; Hardcore PvP raises the pressure with a single life. In PvP, death also fuels mutation: repeated respawns increase a mutation level until a player becomes a powerful Void creature, able to seek revenge or join other mutants. Colonists can still hunt down an overconfident mutant as a group.
Across seven-day cycles, players explore, complete quests, gather resources, build, craft, and develop their colonist through technologies and perks. Weapon-specific moves and animations give combat a skill-based character, while new technologies unlock crafting recipes.
