Planar Conquest is a turn-based 4X strategy game inspired by Master of Magic, built around the familiar cycle of exploration, expansion, resource use, and conquest. Players take the role of a Sorcerer Lord, either customizing a character or selecting a pre-generated one, then shaping an empire through magic, military strength, diplomacy, and economic development. That strategic, turn-based format gives player-count figures a particular context: they reflect activity around a game centered on deliberate empire management rather than moment-to-moment action.
Character-building and spellcraft are central to the design. A lord’s choice among spell circles determines which spells can be learned, while disciplines add advantages or disadvantages to suit different play styles. Beyond the strategic map, the game features tactical battles, recruitable military units, summoned magical creatures, and heroes who can be equipped with enchanted weapons and armor. Units gain experience through victories, adding a progression layer to conflict.
Exploration extends across procedurally generated Planes of Existence, whose layouts can be customized by shape, landmasses, and size. Players can investigate locations for loot and face their guardians, develop settlements with buildings, establish new towns, and extend borders by taking neutral or enemy cities. Diplomacy and tactical, strategic, and global spells offer further ways to pursue advantage. The result is a broad, single-player strategy experience that combines realm-scale planning with battlefield decisions and character progression.
