Pharaoh: A New Era recasts the classic Egyptian city-builder as a strategy and simulation game about guiding settlements along the Nile. Its premise is broader than laying out streets: the player must cultivate fertile land and oversee the economy, trade, culture, health, agriculture, and education while working toward a prosperous city and the standing of a revered pharaoh.
The distinctive challenge comes from balancing everyday development against pressures that can disrupt it. Nile floods, economic and political crises, enemy plundering, and the favor of the gods all figure in the city’s fortunes. Players can raise monuments such as pyramids and the Sphinx, while temples and mausoleums support the management of health, culture, and religion. The redesigned interface also includes tools such as a Nilometer for tracking flood frequency or quality and indicators for residents’ mood, making civic oversight part of the play rather than mere decoration.
Its format offers both guided progression and open-ended building: Campaign mode introduces the basics through a story set in Ancient Egypt, while Sandbox mode lets players build a metropolis without that campaign structure. The game brings together the original Pharaoh and Cleopatra: Queen of the Nile in a remake with reworked isometric 2D art, a redesigned soundtrack, and updated mechanics.
