Patrician IV is a historical trading simulation set in northern Europe during the late Middle Ages, when the Hanseatic League flourished. You begin as a merchant dealing in common goods and aim to rise through the league’s ranks to become its elected Elderman. The Steam Special Edition adds alternate textures for the Counting House and Cog ship type, a visual distinction within this strategy-focused package.
Trade and expansion form the core of the design. Players build production, establish a merchant fleet, construct buildings, hire workers and stimulate demand for goods ranging from everyday staples to exotic wares. The simulation also asks you to balance trade routes with political turmoil, disease, weather, piracy and the demands of royalty. As your wealth and influence grow, you can shape towns and even found new ones, turning small settlements into major cities.
Competition reaches beyond commerce: rivals can be challenged through price wars and sabotage, while piracy offers a darker route to power. At sea, ships can be protected from pirate raiders in battles described as realistic. This mix of economic planning, civic development and maritime conflict gives Patrician IV a broad strategic scope, with a stated aim of making its interface approachable while retaining a challenge to master.
