Overlord casts the player as a would-be despot in a fantasy world, with a distinctive moral hook: how corrupt the ruler becomes depends on how they handle situations, and their actions affect the game world. Its story pairs that bid for power with impish humour, framing conquest as both dark fantasy and comic villainy.
The central activity is directing a horde of evil-minded Minions. They can smash, destroy, kill, steal and intimidate on the Overlord’s behalf, while the player also wields powers that make enemies burst into flames or cower. Loot gathered from the battlefield can be forged into weapons and armour, tying the spoils of violence to the growth of the ruler’s arsenal. The stated goal is to defeat seven fallen heroes and impose the Overlord’s will on the world.
Listed as a single-player RPG, Overlord is built around one player’s command of minions and pursuit of a story-led conquest, rather than a shared multiplayer session.
